The School of Engineering has been in existence from the inception of the University. Initially and for many years after, the school comprised of three programmes namely: Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. In 1998, three programmes were added to the existing programmes bringing the total programmes in the school of Engineering to six.

Philosophy and Objectives of the School

The general philosophy of the School of Engineering is to produce graduates with high academic standards and adequate practical background such that they are of immediate value to industry and the nation. All programmes are pragmatic in order to turn out engineers capable of solving local Nigerian problems in addition to global challenges that they might be confronted with. To achieve this, specific features of the programmes include:

•   Common foundation years at 100 and 200 levels for all engineers
•   Workshop practice, laboratory work and tutorials
•   Design projects with bias towards local applications.
•   Broad based engineering courses and interaction between students and professionals in industry and government.
•   Project in the final year on which the student works independently under supervision
•   Special skills and in depth study in a particular area of the program through optional courses or electives.
•   Adequate knowledge in the areas of engineering management, economics and law.
The objectives of the school are:
•   To produce graduates with high academic standard coupled with adequate practical experience, who are able to meet the challenges of a developing economy and sufficiently tackle common day-to-day engineering problems.
• •  To produce graduates with broad-based knowledge in general studies, management and humanities, all of which enhance their understanding, contribution and relevance to the society.
  
  School Admission Requirements
  
  The admission requirements, common to all students of the School, are as follows.

Five-year Degree Programme (JME entry Candidates).

Candidates must satisfy all University entry requirements including the required five credits in relevant papers all obtained at not more than two sittings. The qualifying subjects must include credit in English language, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry at the WASC/GCE 'O-level' or its equivalent.

Four- years Degree Programme (Direct Entry Candidates)

Direct entry candidates will normally enrol in the second year of the Programme. To qualify for direct entry, candidates must satisfy the WASC/GCE 'O-level' requirements in 2.1.1 above. In addition the qualifying subjects must include passes in Mathematics and Physics at GCE 'A' level, IJMB or its equivalent. For Chemical and Petroleum Engineering, an A-level pass in Chemistry is required.

The School also recognizes the need for diploma holders to be given opportunity to improve themselves. Holders of national diploma, ND, in the same discipline, can be admitted into the 200level. Higher National diploma, HND, holders in the same discipline can be admitted to 300level. In any case, such candidates must also satisfy O-level requirements spelt out in 2.1.1 above and their diploma must be at minimum of lower credit.
